MINERAL CARE, EXPLAINED
What is an alum block?
Alum refers to a family of mineral salts. Potassium alum is commonly used in solid mineral deodorants, where the mineral is lightly dampened and applied to clean skin.
Revalow will publish the final ingredient list, directions and product-specific claims with the first release.
How mineral deodorant works
Mineral alum deodorant is used to help manage body odour. Applied as a thin layer on clean skin, the mineral surface helps create conditions that are less favourable for odour-causing bacteria.
Deodorant, not a conventional antiperspirant
Alum deodorant is used differently from conventional antiperspirants. It is generally chosen for odour control while allowing the body’s normal perspiration process to continue.
How it is typically used
Wet the mineral surface lightly, glide it over clean skin, then rinse the stick and allow it to dry. The final Revalow label instructions should always take priority.
Does alum contain aluminium?
Yes. Potassium alum is an aluminium-containing mineral salt. Its chemistry and use are different from many conventional antiperspirant active ingredients, so the terms should not be treated as interchangeable.
Can everyone use an alum deodorant?
Personal-care products can affect people differently. Do not apply to broken or irritated skin. Stop using the product if irritation develops and seek suitable medical advice if a reaction persists.
Why does the mineral need to be damp?
A small amount of water allows the smooth mineral surface to glide across the skin and leave a light mineral layer. The stick should then be rinsed and allowed to dry between uses.
Will Revalow publish full product information?
Yes. Ingredients, directions, warnings, size and confirmed product claims will be shown clearly when the first Revalow product is released.
RESEARCH-INFORMED COMPARISON
Alum block or antiperspirant?
They do different jobs. Alum is mainly an odour-focused mineral deodorant approach, while conventional antiperspirants are specifically formulated to reduce perspiration. The better fit depends on your priority.
Best suited to odour-focused mineral care.
Potassium alum has laboratory evidence showing inhibition of several bacteria associated with axillary malodour. A solid alum block is used as a deodorant-style mineral layer rather than as a conventional sweat-blocking antiperspirant.
- Odour-focused approach without intentionally reducing normal perspiration
- Simple solid-mineral format with no aerosol or roll-on mechanism
- Potassium alum has in-vitro evidence against several malodour-associated bacteria
- A useful option for people who prefer a minimal mineral deodorant routine
- Not the better-supported choice when reducing wetness is the main goal
- Potassium alum still contains aluminium, so “aluminium-free” would be inaccurate
- Skin tolerance varies and irritation can occur, particularly on freshly shaved or damaged skin
- Finished-product claims must be supported by evidence for the released Revalow formulation
Best suited when reducing sweat and wetness matters most.
Human clinical studies support the ability of aluminium-salt antiperspirants to reduce sweat. They work differently from deodorants and are the more appropriate category when sweat reduction is the main goal.
- Specifically formulated to reduce perspiration and underarm wetness
- Human studies support sweat reduction from aluminium-salt antiperspirant formulations
- Can be a better fit for people whose main concern is heavy sweating or visible wetness
- Widely available in multiple formats and strengths
- Intentionally reduces perspiration, which may not match every customer’s preference
- Some formulations can irritate sensitive skin
- Fragrance, alcohol and other ingredients vary by product and should be checked individually
- It addresses wetness more directly than a mineral deodorant, so the two categories are not like-for-like
Research distinguishes deodorant activity from antiperspirant activity. A 2016 laboratory study reported antibacterial activity from potassium alum against several malodour-associated axillary bacteria, while human antiperspirant studies show aluminium-salt formulations can reduce sweat. This does not prove every alum product is universally better, safer or more effective, and it is not a finished-product clinical claim for Revalow.
Ingredient-level research is provided for education. Final Revalow product claims will be limited to evidence held for the released formulation. Patch-test if you are concerned about skin sensitivity and do not apply to broken or irritated skin.
